An updated version of Kenji Iwaizawa's "Music" will be screened at Shinjuku Musashinokan from September 19th.
The animated film "Music" will be shown again at Shinjuku Musashino Hall in Tokyo from September 19th as a "brushed-up version" with over 200 newly drawn scenes.
The film took over seven years to produce, with director Kenji Iwaizawa almost single-handedly adapting the self-published manga by Hiroyuki Ohashi, and was released in January 2020.
It depicts three delinquent students, Kenji (Sakamoto Shintaro), Ota (Maeno Tomoya), and Asakura (Serizawa Kohito), who have never even touched an instrument before, forming a rock band on a whim and devoting themselves to music.
The 71-minute animated film, entirely hand-drawn, has over 40,000 frames, and for the climax scene at an outdoor festival, an actual stage was built and a live performance was held with musicians and audience members.
Starting with winning the Grand Prix in the feature film competition at the Ottawa International Animated Film Festival, the film has gone on to win various awards both in Japan and abroad, including the Best Original Music Award in the Contrechamp feature film category at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2020 and the Grand Prize in the Entertainment category at the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival, both of which are sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
It has also been nominated for the Annie Awards, known as the "Academy Awards of the animation world."
This revival screening will be held to commemorate the release of Director Iwaizawa's latest work, "Hyakuenmu.", on September 19th. The full comment from Director Iwaizawa is as follows:
[Kenji Iwaisawa (Director)]
"Music" will be screened again to mark the milestone of the release of the second animated film, "Hyakuenmu.", and the 5th anniversary of its release in 2020!
New screening materials have been created for this re-screening, and they have been polished up over another 6 months since the version released 5 years ago. The content hasn't changed, so you may not be able to tell what has changed, but we hope you will come to the theater to experience "Music," which took 7.5 years + 6 months = 8 years to produce!
