Details have been announced for Villains Land, Disney's first-ever villain-themed area, at Disney World in Florida. Revealed at the official fan event "Destination D23," the project is attracting significant attention as a groundbreaking initiative that overturns the conventional wisdom of Disney parks, which have traditionally focused on princesses and heroes.
Disney World, located in Orlando, Florida, is one of the world's largest Disney resorts. It boasts four theme parks on land roughly the same size as Tokyo, and is visited by approximately 50 million people annually. Villains Land is planned to be built in Magic Kingdom, the resort's core facility.
In previous Disney parks, villains have been relegated to supporting roles. This time, however, villains such as Jafar (Aladdin), Scar (The Lion King), Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), and Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) will take center stage.
In a statement, Disney explained that the new park will be "home to the villains we know and hate." "Their evil ambitions create endless possibilities for storytelling. Visitors to this dark and troubling area should prepare for chaos."
Villainsland was first announced at the D23 Expo in August 2024, and it was initially predicted that it would include two major attractions, restaurants, and shops built on an "incredibly twisted and epic scale."
More specific development details were revealed at this year's Destination D23. Of particular note is the participation of Andreas Deja, the renowned Disney Animation animator who designed iconic villain characters such as Jafar, Scar, and Gaston. Deja's credits include Jafar from "The Little Mermaid" and Scar from "The Lion King."
Deja commented, "The villains' big personalities, bold visuals, and rich backgrounds will influence the overall atmosphere of the new Villainsland," demonstrating his enthusiasm for creating a space that makes the most of the appeal of the original work.
This groundbreaking project signals new possibilities for Disney Parks. It steps beyond the traditional image of a "kingdom of dreams and magic" and challenges more complex, multifaceted storytelling.
The appeal of villain characters lies in their complex humanity, which goes beyond a simple conflict of good and evil, and their personalities, which are sometimes even more striking than those of the protagonists. One factor behind this project is the popularity of recent live-action films such as "Maleficent" and "Cruella" that focus on the villains' backgrounds.
In parallel with Villainsland, construction of a new "Cars"-themed area in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom is also underway, as part of a major expansion of the park.
While a specific opening date has not yet been announced, this ambitious undertaking, unprecedented in Disney Park history, has fans worldwide eagerly awaiting further updates.
