The original manga is a work drama written by Shiraiwa Hisaya (original story) and illustrated by Itsuki Takashi, published by Yoshimoto Books in 2009.
Set in Tokyo in the early 2000s, the story follows Kenji Isobe, a fighter working for Ganglion Corporation, a company plotting world domination. He takes on the "Tokyo Cedar Pollen Operation" and "Mount Fuji Bombing Operation" wearing only tights, but is easily defeated with a single blow by the righteous hero Hopeman. However, since this is the early days of compliance, he endures his superiors' unreasonableness and struggles to get by.
Ueda plays the protagonist Isobe, the head of the Belve Corps, Ganglion's world domination division; Tachiki plays Colonel Shadow (real name: Kageyama Minoru), who often gives gifts to the chairman in hopes of filling the vacant position of general; and Sugita plays Hopeman, an evil-fighting character who is very popular among children.
Other cast members include Koga Aoi as Isobe Setsuko, Isobe's devoted wife; Aoyama Yoshino as Isobe Takashi, Isobe's son who loves his father; Tono Hikaru as Setsuko's younger sister Yumiko, who lives with Hopeman; and Itao Itsuji as the owner of the oden stall that Isobe frequents.
The series will begin airing on AT-X from 8:30 p.m. on October 3rd, followed by TV Tokyo from 1:53 a.m. on the 4th, BS Yoshimoto from 10:55 p.m. on the 4th, and TV Osaka from 9:55 p.m. on the 7th.
The main visual was created by character designer Shigeru Fujita, and depicts a scene of Isobe, who works as a salaryman fighter, exchanging business cards.
The full comments from Ueda and the other main cast members, original author Shiraiwa, manga artist Itsuki, and director Watanabe are below. Itsuki also sent a congratulatory illustration.
On a personal note, this is my first leading role in an anime series.
I'll do my best, but not too hard, and I'll play a laid-back character with a burning heart.
I'm looking forward to playing this life-sized man.
It goes by in a flash, but you'll want to know what happens next, and before you know it, you'll be hooked.
Please look forward to this production!!
[Fumihiko Tachiki (role of Colonel Shadow)]
Colonel Shadow is literally a shadowy character, a quintessential middle manager! He only has eyes for himself, and to put it nicely, he is an honest man.
As someone who has played villains as part of his job in many stories, this time I was able to vividly portray the curly-haired old man, who exudes sadness and a comical quality due to his naiveté.
Our true selves... lurk behind the mask.
I hope that this character and the theme of this work will reach many people.
[Tomokazu Sugita (role of Hopeman)]
He has an oddly realistic side that makes you wonder if he was based on someone, so please enjoy.
During recording, I tried to imagine what it would be like from Ganglion's perspective.
Rather than a righteous heart, I tried to build up the character while keeping in mind a selfish psychology that prioritizes one's own motivations.
Justice is always in hope! Hope!!
[Original work by Hisaya Shiraiwa]
All of the characters that appear are based on real people.
This is what companies were like in the old days... although it may seem inappropriate from a modern perspective.
These days I find myself thinking that things were more fun in the old days.
[Takashi Itsuki (manga)]
I'm very happy that it's now being made into an anime.
The story is about the evil organization "Ganglion" and has a nostalgic, melancholic feel to it.
I hope many people will watch it.
[Ayumu Watanabe (Director)]
What is right? What is strength?
Here are hints to the answers.
Just give it a try.
A title whose meaning won't come up even if you search for it.
A mixture of logic and emotion. So many things that can't be resolved.
Even while you think that this is just how the world is, you come to love the part of yourself that resists it somewhere.
Something that seemed possible but didn't? Something that existed but had been forgotten? Is there really no need to go out of your way to depict something so obvious?
"Ganglion" is a look behind a mask at this mundane, inconspicuous, everyday way of life.
